About Tanzania Alliance for Biodiversity

Tanzania Alliance for Biodiversity (TABIO) works to protect livelihoods and strengthen food security by championing agricultural biodiversity. With Howden Foundation’s support, TABIO is launching the highly successful Schools and College Permaculture Programme (SCOPE) in Tanzania for the first time.

Tanzania is already experiencing the climate crisis. It faces rising temperatures, prolonged drought, and shifting rainfall patterns . SCOPE uses school grounds as hands-on learning sites to demonstrate how permaculture techniques can build resilience to extreme heat and water scarcity. Practical interventions, such as creating food forests that improve soil health, enhance water retention, and spread harvested rainwater, help schools and surrounding communities adapt to their changing environment.

Over the next two years, TABIO will partner with ReSCOPE, local Tanzanian organisations, and nine schools to embed SCOPE Tanzania. The programme is expected to reach more than 8,000 people, including teachers, learners, and parents, equipping them with practical skills to strengthen community resilience.
